The opposition to these forces had surfaced a couple of days earlier in a meeting of the 18-member Cabinet Committee on Earthquake Relief, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation (CCERRR) held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.
"One of the federal ministers expressed serious concern over the presence of Nato and US forces and delay in opening of the Line of Control (LoC)," sources said, adding that the Prime Minister clarified that Nato forces, comprising only relief teams of engineers and doctors, were initially here for a period of three months.
They said that some Cabinet members were of the view that AJK Prime Minister and NWFP Chief Minister, should be invited to attend next meeting so that they could present their viewpoint on the situation and damage due to earthquake. They said that the committee agreed to invite both of them in the next meeting.
According to sources, need was stressed for exploring the possibility of construction of a temporary airport at a suitable point beyond Mansehra and making Muzaffarabad airport worthy of taking C-130 traffic.
Another member expressed concern over payment procedure, saying that the complex procedure should be simplified, expedited and decentralised to the local level with the involvement of local community, civil administration and military authorities present in the area.
The committee also considered the proposal of involving people of the affected areas in the planning stage of the activities of the Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA), NGOs and Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund partners be involved in the distribution of relief items and the need for immediate preparation of a tourism action plan to generate employment and sustainable livelihood for the victims, sources added.
They said that the Cabinet Committee was informed that a team of geologists had been sent to Allai, NWFP, which reported that there was no risk of volcanic activity in the area.
After a detailed discussion the committee decided to constitute a panel comprising ministers for interior, health, social welfare and special education and adviser to the Prime Minister on women development to formulate a policy/strategy for special handing of widows, orphans, special children, amputees and destitute.
It was also decided that Punjab government should be asked to avoid further delay and expedite establishment of tented refugee camps at Chakwal and Fateh Jang.
Minister for labour, manpower and overseas Pakistanis was directed to mobilise and motivate overseas Pakistanis to donate money to President's Relief Fund for Earthquake Victims-2005 and supply of tents for providing shelter to the earthquake affectees, sources added.
